Sign Thefts

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Wollondilly,Australia sign thefts put lives in danger. A number of permanent signs and temporary traffic control notices have gone missing from roadsides.

The council believes the thefts make the roads unsafe and divert funds from elsewhere to replace them. It revealed almost $50,000 of its $120,000 annual signage budget was spent on replacing missing or vandalised signs.

Acting works manager Michael Nelson said the thefts were a growing concern.

“Some of the signage to go missing are chevrons which indicate the tightness of the approaching corner,” he said. “These signs going missing leave the particular roadside absent of such warnings, which could present a danger to unsuspecting motorists.”

Signage Issues

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Canada, Dieppe Mayor Jean LeBlanc says he is proud of how his council and staff have handled the French signage issue in the world's largest Acadian city. Despite mounting pressure to push through a linguistic signage policy, including petitions and outspoken critics, LeBlanc said council and staff have been working to get the regulatory package right.

"Yes there has been pressure, but everybody realizes how important this is and we are best to get it right, rather than have it done expediently," said LeBlanc, noting that staff has been studying policies in other municipalities to determine what would work best in Dieppe.

"That is why I am so proud of council and so proud of staff."

The mayor said the council is only weeks away from debating and likely adopting a new language policy with respect to signage in the city. He said the issue should take centre stage in council's chamber by late November.

But he said it is crucial that the proper due diligence is done and that the new measures are studied from every possible vantage point before unveiling any details.

In addition, he said it is important that the policy is properly communicated to avoid sparking any unfounded controversy that might jeopardize the work that has been done.

Uniform Signage

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Greenville Wisconsin— When you dial 911 to report a fire or medical emergency at your home, first responders and firefighters are dispatched to help. But what happens if they can't easily locate your residence because they can't see the numbers of your address?

It has happened to first responders and firefighters in Greenville, and as a result, the town is proposing an ordinance that would establish requirements for the placement and maintenance of address signs at all residential, commercial, industrial or other occupancies in the sanitary district and rural areas.

Some address numbers are on mailboxes, others are displayed on houses and some newer homes have the address etched into stone or brick, according to Town Chairman Randy Leiker.

In addition, mailboxes are placed on the same side of the street in some areas, making it difficult to distinguish which box belongs to which house.

"Having uniform signage will make it easier for emergency personnel to see numbers from the street," Leiker said. "It's important for resident safety."

Relaxed Signage

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Wellington village council with a unanimous vote preliminarily approved an updated ordinance regulating signs. The village's sign code is older than the village itself and considered restrictive for businesses, particularly those in shopping centers.

To that end, the new ordinance would allow window signage to cover up to 50 percent of the glass, permanent internal banners and temporary outdoor banners. Also A-frame signs and additional street frontage monument signs with tenant names would be allowed.

Some other changes: gas stations must post gasoline prices on signs they dedicate exclusively for that purpose. They can't use them to advertise promotions.

Dangerous Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Invercargill, New Zealand, blind and vision-impaired residents are calling on the city's shopkeepers to put their footpath signs in safe locations – not where blind people will walk into them. Vision-impaired city woman Hannah Pascoe said she and others had knocked over signs when walking along city footpaths in recent times because they could not see them.

It was both embarrassing and dangerous, and the walking area of footpaths should be kept clear of signage, she said. A Southland Association of Blind Citizens member, Ms Pascoe has written to Mayor Tim Shadbolt urging the council to reinstate a bylaw limiting where shopkeepers may place footpath signs.

The council's environmental and planning services director, William Watt, said a council bylaw, in place until about 2006, restricted businesses to one sign each, with those signs to be placed on the outside of footpaths beside parking meters.

New Trail Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as The City of Frankfort’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites will open a new system of trails in the Leslie Morris Park on Fort Hill with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week. The new trails open to public use much of the 125-acre park that has been inaccessible until now. Shaped like a giant figure eight, the trails offer one paved loop and one with a natural surface. Interpretive stations along the way explain the natural features beside the trails.

Walkers can learn about how woodlands change over time and the relationships between people and their natural environment. Each interpretive station has a bench and explanatory signage.

One trail loop is named Goin Trail in honor of Sanford Goin who was a member of the garrison of Fort Boone that repulsed a Civil War Confederate cavalry raid on Frankfort in 1864. Fort Boone is one of two earthwork forts in the park.

Good Road Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as citing better business practices and a company’s promise to do better, Peterborough County put Canadian Tourism-Oriented Directional Signage in charge of its tourism signs for a further 10 years.

Nick Bacon, general manager of the company referred to as TODS, said concerns about sign conditions and construction previously voiced by some county councillors have now been addressed.

The company has put up about 45 signs throughout the county and about 13,000 throughout Ontario.

Otonabee-South Monaghan Township Reeve Dave Nelson said there are signs on County Rd. 2 that were damaged and never repaired.

About a year ago, the county urged the province to drop TODS as the provincial provider of tourism signs because of the shoddy condition of signs and lengthy waits to get signs erected.

Unsatisfied with the level of service from TODS, Nelson asked if there was any way the county could get out of the contract if that level of service continued.

Signage Frenzy

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as a a signage error at a Marathon gas station in Avondale, Ohio, created a short-lived buying frenzy among consumers. Unbeknownst to its employees, the signage at the station promoted 27-cents a gallon gasoline last week. Word spread quickly among consumers, and the pricing error continued for two-and-a-half hours. One customer drove from Erlanger, Kentucky, 175 miles away, to take advantage of the savings.

Consumers using credit cards made out with the savings windfall. But as customers began paying with cash, the station's employees eventually discovered their error. The signage error occurred during a change in pump prices. The station refused comment on how much money the mistake cost its store operators.

Save Our Reef Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Lihu‘e, Hawaii — the reefs are alive and are damaged when people walk on them, Kaua‘i Save Our Seas President Paul Clark said Sunday. Like Godzilla in Tokyo, walking on reefs harms the endemic ocean environment consisting of fish, algae, coral and other invertebrates, he said. These organisms are essential to the ecosystem.

“There are very few signs or even educational pieces on Kaua‘i that really let people know what’s happening on the reefs or really what the reef is,” Clark said. “People think it’s entirely dead, but it’s really alive, even down to the microscopic level.”

In an effort to help reverse the damage already done, the nonprofit Save Our Seas has been placing new coral reef education signs at local dive and surf shops across the island, urging residents and visitors not to come in direct contact with the reef.

Campaign Signs Stolen

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Politicians understand that some of their political signs are necessary casualties in a campaign, but three Bainbridge City Council, Washington candidates have recently been victimized by a political plunderer.

Debbi Lester, Dee DuMont and Kirsten Hytopoulos had a combined 46 campaign signs taken at the end of September.

The candidates learned of the theft after Hytopoulos’ treasurer located several signs in the water at Manitou Beach. The candidates said they believed the same person had stolen all the signs because they were tied together in the water.
