Getting Tough On Signage Rules

More signage news from in and around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Potsdam, New York, the village is once again cracking down on off-premise signs downtown, asking proprietors to remove fliers and advertisements for other businesses from shop windows.

Code Enforcement Officer John F. Hill recently distributed notice letters to downtown business owners to advise them to remove off-premise signs from their establishments. "People aren't aware of the law, and if somebody brings in a poster who wants to put it in the window, they say go ahead. There is a process you have to go through," Mr. Hill said. "You can't advertise off-premise."

Village code prohibits businesses from putting advertisements for other establishments in their windows.

Revised Signage Guidelines

More signage news from in and around the the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Matawan, New Jersey — The Borough Council is revising signage ordinances to enhance the ambiance of the downtown. Councilman Tom Fitzsimmons said at a meeting, that creating a uniform look for downtown Matawan could attract new businesses.

He went on to say "We want all the signs in town to look somewhat similar," he said. "What we are trying to do is brand this area as a historical, quaint little town. Once you've done that, you've created the environment for people to come here and open a business, like a coffee shop or antique shop. We can give the downtown a uniform look and give business owners guidelines."

The borough wants to encourage signs that identify activities, describe local history and character, or serve other educational purposes, according to the draft.

Temp Signage Rules To Be Relaxed

More signage news from in and around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Pittsburgh. Peters Township business owners told the township's council that a proposed zoning ordinance expanding the number of permits allowed for temporary signs does not go far enough. Council held a public hearing on a proposed ordinance change that would expand the number of permits a business could get in one year for a temporary sign.

Ed Zuk, township planning director, said the ordinance would expand from four per year to six per year the number of permits allowed for one business. But he said it would decrease the number of days for each permit from 14 days to 10 days. He said this would be a net addition of four more days in a year that a business could make use of temporary signs.

Better Airport Signage Needed

More signage news from in and around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Fine Gael Deputy Michael Ring, spokesperson for community, rural, and Gaeltacht affairs, has called on Mayo County Council and the NRA to improve the signage for Ireland West Airport Knock.

“I have been contacted by both Mayo residents and visitors who expressed their concern about the signage for them travelling to and from the airport,” Dep Ring said. “Really what is creating a lot of confusion for tourists is the signage for Knock Shrine as many have presumed that is where the airport was located.

“I am anxious to get signs erected to indicate exactly where Ireland West Airport Knock is, similar to the signage for the Turlough House and the National Museum of Country Life. A number of people have made complaints to me on this issue and I have received several e-mails from tourists who toured Mayo, and when they were going to the airport they found it very difficult to locate.

Signs Could Save Lives

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as West Midlands Ambulance Service has been developing a unique project to help identify where public access defibrillators are located. Duncan Parsonage, WMAS Community Response Manager for South Staffordshire, came up with the idea and has since been working to install signage throughout the West Midlands Region.

There are over 1900 defibrillators in the West Midlands.

Each location and it respective sign holds a unique identification number, which tallies up with database held within West Midlands Ambulance Service.

This database can be used by the Emergency Operations Centre and allows call takers and dispatchers to be aware of defib locations.

Smaller Signs Please

More signage news from in and around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Elections have sometimes been won or lost on long rural highways with campaign signs that rival the size of storage sheds. Those days may soon be over for Horry County, South Carolina. The Horry County Council moved forward an ordinance Tuesday that would change campaign sign size limits from 32 square feet to 16 square feet and regulate how those signs are secured.

The move would make Horry County the latest in a string of local governments that have wrangled with the number, appearance, size and placement of signs to create a fair political environment and protect the look of their towns. The county has an ordinance to regulate signs, which are not allowed on fences, utility poles or on trees.

The county will remove signs that violate the policy. The county and the cities also have time limits for when signs can be put up and how soon they must be taken down after an election.

Signs In Malta

More signage news from in and around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as it is not only centuries-old grand buildings which one can admire in Valletta, Malta – any visitor who looks for them will find quaint shops and street signs of different epochs that decorate the capital. Many disappeared or were left to deteriorate but some others have been preserved.

In 1998 the Malta Environment and Planning Authority scheduled the only street sign in French in Valletta, a survivor of the short two-year period of the French occupation. The sign is painted on the wall at the corner of Old Theatre Street and Treasury Street. It was covered with a perspex frame in the 1990s to protect it from the elements.

The design guidelines for Urban Conservation Areas (1995), provide that wherever possible, Mepa should protect all cultural features that have acquired heritage value by virtue of their age – over 50 years as stipulated by local law – and/or owing to their history and socio-economic significance, or because they are an integral element of their surroundings.

No Sign Of The Signs

More signage news from in and around the UK Hants and Dorset Signs as A Tweeddale councillor has hit out after signs aimed at stopping service buses clogging up car parks have failed to be put up. A Traffic Regulation Order was first suggested at the start of 2007 to prevent school coaches and other service buses taking up parking space around central Peebles. It was eventually voted through this spring to impose a three-hour limit.

Traders and councillors had all voiced concerns that tourist coaches were driving straight through the town due to a lack of parking. And the order was seen as a saving grace for the struggling High Street. But almost five months on, the restriction signs for Kingsmeadows, Neidpath and Edinburgh Road car parks have still to be put up - and most of them haven't even been made yet.

New Sign-Posting To Spark Regeneration

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as NEW sign posting is one of the first requirements for Port St Mary's Isle Of Man regeneration, a working party has decided. The Port St Mary Regeneration Working Party, comprising local traders Tim Croft (Island Seafare), Michelle Haywood (Discover Diving) and Laurence Skelly (Manx Inspirations and Destination Isle of Man) and commissioners Rebecca Sinfield, Bernadette McCauley and Martin Kennaugh, was formed to investigate ideas to put forward to claim some of the government's £8m regeneration fund.

'We are looking at sign posting. If you start at the Four Roads and come to Port St Mary, what is there?' said commissioners' chairman Alec Merchant.

'Where are the car parks? Where is the information about what is around the port?.There should be signage throughout the village, not a rash of new sign posts, but judiciously placed information, with points of interest and where they should obtain food. They are ideas to draw people through village, if there are some areas where there are explanatory boards it will all be done in a tasteful way".
