In his letter, Todd Medlock of Portsmouth, stated the left-lane ended prior to the bridge and vehicles operating in the lane must actually merge right to avoid an incident with traffic coming from the opposite direction. If the vehicles in the right lane were to merge left, Medlock continued, they would end enter into the lane that was ending.

Deborah Finnigan, the city's traffic engineer, said the letter represented the first time the concern had been raised. After the matter was reviewed Thursday, it was decided changes would be made to address the safety concern.

The signing project will include renaming the Main Terminal and East Terminal to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, respectively. The $1.2 million signage project got a $200,000 boost Wednesday from the Regional Business Council.

The new signs will go up in January. The Regional Business Council contribution will cover painting of sign structures, guardrails, streetlights and fencing.

"We are responding to our travelers and the community by replacing the roadway signs that are confusing, outdated and in some cases an eyesore," Airport Director Richard Hrabko said.

The commission began its quest earlier this year as members discussed the possibility of publicizing the many recreational hiking trails on a map encompassing the entire township. However, for that to work, commissioners said that roadside signs would be needed to allow people to easily find the trail access points that would be highlighted on the map.

At a recent meeting in the municipal building, Environmental Commissioner Andrew Abdul said that having signs that can be easily identified while driving would provide a needed and requested service to recreational hikers without expending a significant amount of money.

Abdul added that this increased exposure could boost the utilization of local trails as well as major inter-state trails like the 150-mile Highlands Trail and the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail that pass through West Milford while crossing major roadways like Gould, Continental, Union Valley and Long House roads.

Smooth Bridge

Beginning today, work crews are installing six large signs on the approaches to the bridge, Halifax Harbour Bridges announced Tuesday.

"They are for us to manage the traffic a little bit and alert the public to incidents or to road conditions ahead," said bridge engineer John Eppell.

The large, overhead, LED-lit signs are being installed now and testing should get underway sometime in January with the whole system up and running by the end of February. Each sign holds up to three lines of text.

The cost for the project is $2.2 million, which is being paid from toll revenue, Mr. Eppell said.

Managing traffic is an increasing concern for the bridge operators because the number of crossings is growing steadily, he said. During the work week, the two bridges handle more than 100,000 vehicles per day.

The idea for the signs was first floated as a way to prevent putting employees in danger on stormy, windy days. Currently workers dressed in highly visible jackets and using flashlights try to divert trucks away from the bridge when it is closed to high-sided vehicles, Mr. Eppell said.

"The goal is to create some parameters so we don't get total clutter, but so we're competitive with other communities," said Mayor John Evans. "We want to clean this up over time, not exacerbate it."

The changes would occur slowly over the next 20 years, as new businesses bring new signs that comply with the proposed standards, Evans said.

This is the city's second run at the idea. An earlier attempt was panned by members of the business community who were excluded from the talks.

Each of them has gotten a letter from Bartow code enforcement inspectors asking them to fix the problem or face the city's code enforcement board.

"We're really cracking down on this sign problem," said Gregg Lamb, director of the city's building department. "It was getting out of hand. If we don't restrict it, it looks like the circus is coming to town down Broadway Avenue."

Most of the businesses have complied, Lamb said, which is all the city wants them to do.

"We really haven't had too much trouble," he said. "The Planning and Zoning Commission worked hard several years ago revamping the sign ordinance, and it should be enforced. We just want the city to look nice."

Most of the violations have involved temporary signs in road rights-of-way and banners on storefronts, he said. If business owners see somebody else getting away with it, then they're going to try it.

The new father on the crew, Randolph Bresnik, bolted out of NASA's spaceport when the meal was over. He flew home to Houston a day ahead of his crewmates so he could see his newborn daughter and wife, who gave birth Saturday.

But the controversy has largely bypassed Johnston, in part due to a change in city ordinance years ago.

Dave Wilwerding, Johnston's community development director, said his department cleaned up the city's sign ordinance about six years ago to address the trend of using temporary signs such as banners, sandwich boards and mobile electronic boards to advertise sales.

A $25 permit is required for nonpermanent signage in Johnston, with exceptions for certain types of signs, such as real estate and garage sale signs. Applicants may request such permits for two "events" per year, and each permit granted is valid for 10 days, with one of the events eligible for a 20-day extension.

By comparison, Urbandale previously permitted temporary signs to be displayed for 40 consecutive days. The ordinance was amended to extend the limit to 100 days.
